Flag of St. Nicholas
Back to all places
One of Vlaho Bukovac’s fascinating creations is the painted flag of St. Nicholas, crafted in 1902. St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and children, is beautifully depicted in this work, which merges Bukovac’s academic painting skills with elements of Croatian sacred art. Over time, environmental exposure caused the flag to deteriorate, but thanks to careful restoration efforts carried out between 2016 and 2019, this historical piece has been preserved for future generations to admire. Notably, this flag holds the honor of being the largest banner ever to participate in the famed procession of St. Blaise in Dubrovnik, adding another layer to its cultural significance.
