Nautilus – The Living Fossil

Drifting through the deep waters of the Indo-Pacific, the Nautilus is a relic of the ancient seas, having existed virtually unchanged for 500 million years. With its intricate, spiraled shell divided into gas-filled chambers, the Nautilus controls its buoyancy like a submarine, rising and sinking in the water column as it hunts for food.

Nautiluses have fascinated humans for centuries. Their logarithmic spiral shell follows the golden ratio, inspiring architects, artists, and mathematicians alike. Despite their evolutionary success, these creatures are now at risk due to overharvesting for their shells, which are highly prized in jewelry and decorations.

Scientists are pushing for stronger protections, including restrictions on trade and the creation of deep-sea marine reserves, to prevent these remarkable mollusks from disappearing.
