Protecting the Legacy of the Sea
Back to all places
As we reach the end of our journey through the world of mollusks, we hope you leave with a new appreciation for these extraordinary creatures. These shells are not just beautiful artifacts—they are records of the past, architects of marine ecosystems, and symbols of human history and creativity.
Yet, today, many mollusk species face threats from climate change, pollution, and overharvesting. Their delicate balance in nature is under pressure, and it is up to all of us to ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come.
Pinna nobilis, or the noble pen shell, is the second-largest bivalve in the world and an iconic species found in the Adriatic Sea. This remarkable mollusk plays a crucial role in marine ecosystems by filtering water and providing habitat for other species. Unfortunately, Pinna nobilis is now critically endangered due to environmental threats, pollution, and a deadly parasitic pathogen. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species and its habitats, ensuring the Adriatic Sea retains its biodiversity and ecological balance.
What can you do?
· Respect marine life – Avoid taking live shells from beaches and reefs.
· Reduce plastic waste – Pollution directly harms mollusks and their habitats.
· Support conservation efforts – Many organizations work to protect marine biodiversity.
· Stay curious – Keep learning, exploring, and sharing knowledge about the ocean’s wonders.
Thank you for being part of this journey. We hope these stories stay with you, and that you continue to cherish and protect the beauty of the sea. ??
