Sacred Chank – The Divine Trumpet

The Sacred Chank, a large conch-like shell, holds deep spiritual significance in Hinduism and Buddhism. Used as a ritual trumpet in temples, it is believed to ward off evil and bring prosperity. Some chanks even spiral in a rare left-handed (sinistral) direction, making them especially revered.

These mollusks inhabit the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, where they graze on algae and detritus. However, their populations are declining due to overharvesting for religious artifacts and the souvenir trade. Conservation programs in India and Sri Lanka aim to regulate their collection and ensure their survival for future generations.
