Shell Museum Cavtat
Back to all placesWelcome to Shell Museum Cavtat, a place born from passion, curiosity, and a deep love for the sea. This museum is more than just a collection of shells—it is a family story, a lifelong journey, and a mission to protect the oceans.
It all started with a simple fascination: the way each shell carries its own history, shaped by time and tides. Over the years, what began as a personal love for collecting seashells turned into something much greater—a desire to share their incredible stories and inspire others to see the ocean with new eyes.
Every shell in this museum tells a tale—not just of the mollusks that built them, but of the civilizations they touched, the mysteries they hold, and the delicate ecosystems they support. Some shells were once currency, sacred symbols, or musical instruments. Others, like the Triton’s Trumpet, play a crucial role in balancing coral reefs. The Purple Dye Murex, once crushed by the thousands, gave kings and emperors their royal robes. And some, like the Nautilus, have remained unchanged for over 500 million years, surviving mass extinctions yet now threatened by human impact.
But this museum is not just about the past—it is about the future. The ocean is changing, and the delicate world of mollusks is more fragile than ever. That is why we started this project—not just to admire these shells, but to advocate for the sea, to educate, and to inspire action.
As you walk through these exhibits, we invite you to look beyond the shells and into the lives they once protected. Every shell is a storyteller. Every shell is a witness to history. And now, you are part of their story too.
Welcome to our museum. Welcome to our journey.
